Darfur: A Practical Lesson in Applying the UN "Do No Harm" Principle During my assignment in Darfur, Sudan, I experienced an incident that demonstrated how a small misunderstanding can quickly escalate if not addressed through dialogue and mutual respect. One rainy day, an international peacekeeping armored vehicle was driving along a muddy road when it unintentionally splashed muddy water onto a Sudanese motorcyclist. Feeling humiliated and angry, the motorcyclist confronted the soldiers. The situation became tense because neither side spoke the other's language, making communication almost impossible.
